If you’ve seen the movie, you’re probably still sitting there thinking, “What the hell?” But how much foreshadowing was truly present? Was the finale truly as unexpected as it seemed, or were there warning flags to present the entire time? Let’s look at this.
How does Speak No Evil proceed?
The plot is not too complicated. While on vacation in Europe, a couple named Bjrn (Morten Burian) and Louise (Sidsel Siem Koch), along with their daughter Agnes (Liva Forsberg), meet Patrick (Fedja van Huêt) and Karin (Karina Smulders) and their son Abel (Marius Damslev), who is mute due to a congenitally short tongue. Patrick and Karin offer Bjrn and Louise to stay at their rural Dutch home after the holiday; they accept, and things swiftly spiral out of control.
Patrick begins by “forgetting” that Louise is a vegetarian, but things quickly get out of hand. He starts yelling angrily at Abel, drives the couple home after dinner while intoxicated, and carries Agnes to bed with him and Karin after she wakes up sobbing in the middle of the night.
Agnes forgets her stuffed rabbit, so Bjrn returns to fetch it after Louise and Bjrn make the decision to leave. They ultimately decide to spend an additional night. And later that evening, Bjrn discovers something terrible.
What is the last twist?
Bjrn finds a chamber in an outbuilding from the main house that is decorated with vacation pictures. Each picture shows Patrick and Karin with a different couple and, most importantly, a different set of kids.
It becomes obvious what Patrick and Karin are doing when they discover Abel floating face down in Patrick’s swimming pool that they are killing couples they meet while on vacation and abducting their kids to use as bait for their subsequent killings. In order to perpetuate the cycle, they target another marriage with a single child after killing the parents, taking the youngster on vacation while the child’s tongue is amputated so they can’t explain what occurred, then murdering the parents again. Yes, it’s quite awful.
What hints exist?
This twist finale is difficult to predict, much like the best ones. You are caught off guard by it. However, if you go back and watch the entire film, there are some instances where what happens is hinted at. The primary red flags are Patrick and Karin’s actions and the way they keep stealthily taking more and more from Bjrn and Louise.
When Bjrn first meets Patrick, he requests to sit on the chair next to him by the pool. Despite the fact that Bjrn’s daughter is obviously using it—her belongings are still on it—Bjrn caves to politeness and lets Patrick have it.
Through the course of the film, this possessiveness intensifies and seems to centre on the couple’s daughter: There is the aforementioned night crying episode; Karin tells her what to do, bossing her around so much during one meal that Louise eventually steps in. Patrick and Karin decide where she will sleep, setting her up with a tiny bed in Abel’s room; they decide when she will stay home, organising a babysitter to come and look after her without telling her parents until the last minute; there is the aforementioned night crying episode; and they decide when she will stay home.
