On a hot afternoon at the QT Roller Sports Center on September 27, Zhang Jie of the People’s Republic of China triumphed and won the men’s street final at the Asian Games 2023.

Despite starting in the second position before the ‘best trick’ segment, Zhang delivered impressive scores of 78.67 and 81.89, securing the gold with a total of 231.14. Tanjung Sanggoe Darma of Indonesia won the silver medal with a score of 200.63, while Su Jianjun of China took home the bronze with a mark of 195.73.

Meanwhile, Onodera Ginwoo from Japan, who had won both heats and was widely regarded as the front-runner, had an unexpected twist. After a great first run of 76.39, the world bronze medalist and X Games Japan champion took the lead over Zhang Jie by six points going into the five-trick phase.

To the surprise of the audience, Onodera struggled in the “best trick” category as he was unable to complete any tricks. The astonishment peaked when he botched a crucial try, ending his chances of winning a medal.

Who is Zhang Jie?

Zhang Jie is a young Chinese skateboarder. He has been in the news because he won the gold medal in skateboarding at the Asian Games 2023.

He was born on 15 September 2007, in the People’s Republic of China. His height is 1.68 meters, or 5 feet 6 inches.

Zhang is currently 16 years old.

His career

Zhang Jie began skating at the age of 11, quickly gaining notoriety and winning the gold medal in the SKB Skateboarding Men’s Street event at the WS World Championships.

His prowess on the skateboard was further showcased in the Pro Tour, where he participated in events in Sharjah, UAE (57th place with a score of 43.07), Lausanne, SUI (89th place with a score of 23.66), and Rome, ITA (128th place with a score of 13.18) during the 2022/2023 season.

Adding to his accolades, he was honored with the title of Best Skateboarder at the prestigious 2022 Weibo Street Classic held in Shenzhen, People’s Republic of China.
