Naorem Roshibina Devi, a seasoned Wushu competitor from India, advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 60kg sando competition at the Asian Games, which took place in Hangzhou on September 25.

In a quarter-final showdown, Roshibina secured victory with a gap-point advantage against her opponent, Aiman Karshyga from Kazakhstan, effectively assuring India of its first Wushu medal at the 2023 Asian Games.

This achievement marks the second medal at the Asian Games level for Naorem Roshibina Devi, following her bronze win in Jakarta in 2018. Significantly, she was the only representative of India in this sport, and she excelled by taking the top spot in the women’s Wushu Sando division.

Roshibina’s impending semi-final matchup on September 27 is the focus of the current excitement, with a potential final appearance (if she qualifies) set for Thursday. Who is Naorem Roshibina Devi?

Naorem Roshibina Devi is a well-known Indian Wushu player. She has been in the news because she recently secured the bronze medal for India at the Asian Games 2023.

Devi was born and brought up in Bishnpur district, Manipur.

“My father is a farmer but could not go out to till his land because of the grim situation in Manipur. This also meant our income dried up but my family including my mother Naorem Romila Devi and younger brother Naorem Prioijit Singh never shared their problems with me. They wanted me to focus on my game. Even my coach Maibam Premkumar Singh made sure I do not suffer because of the financial constraints and extended every possible support so that I can pursue my dream,” Roshibina, who hails from Kwasiphai Mayai Leikai in Bishnupur district said.

Her career

Naorem Roshibina Devi represented India in Wushu sports. In 2016, at the World Junior Wushu Championships held in Burgas, she made her mark by securing third place and earning a bronze medal in the girl’s 48 kg division.

In the Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta the next year, Roshibina showed off her skills and finished third in her division, earning a well-deserved bronze medal.

In 2019, she continued her career by competing in the South Asian Games, which were held in Kathmandu-Pokhara. Roshibina won the 60 kg class there, taking home the prized gold medal as her extraordinary abilities shined brilliantly.
