In 2019, Sir Frank celebrated 50 years as a Formula One team owner. During his time, he led two teams during, the latter of which won seven drivers’ titles and nine constructors’ crowns.

Frank Williams was born in the South Tyneside town of South Shields. His father was an active Royal Air Force officer at the time, while his mother was a school teacher. After his parents’ marriage fell apart, Williams was partly reared by his aunt and uncle in Jarrow.

He spent the rest of his childhood at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries, Scotland, a private, fee-paying boarding school. In the late 1950s, Williams was given a ride in a Jaguar XK150 by a friend, which piqued his interest in fast automobiles.

After selling the team to investment firm Dorilton Capital, the Briton and his family, including daughter Claire, who had been running the team on a day-to-day basis since 2013, left F1 earlier this year after selling Williams to US investors in September 2020.

Sir Frank,in 2012, started limiting his F1 duties after he stepped down from the Williams board, after suffering spinal cord damage in a vehicle accident in 1986 that rendered him unable to walk.

Claire the took over the role of the family spokesperson and was eventually promoted to Deputy Team Principal, in charge of day-to-day operations. Even after that, Sir Frank retained the title of Team Principal.

His illness injury history has been long. In 2016, Williams had to spend time in the hospital since he was recovering from pneumonia, and as a result In December of last year, he was also admitted to the hospital.

According to a statement released by the team, Williams was admitted to the hospital on Friday and died peacefully on Sunday morning surrounded by his family. Illness is said to have been the cause of his death.

“It is with great sadness that on behalf of the Williams family, the team can confirm the death of Sir Frank Williams CBE, founder and former team principal of Williams Racing, at the age of 79.

“After being admitted into hospital on Friday, Sir Frank passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his family.

“Today we pay tribute to our much loved and inspirational figurehead. Frank will be sorely missed. We request that all friends and colleagues respect the Williams family’s wishes for privacy at this time,” the team said.

Sir Frank Williams Formula 1 Career

Williams, a former racing driver, formed his namesake team in 1977 and went on to become one of F1’s most successful constructors, winning nine constructors’ and seven drivers’ championships, as well as 114 race victories.

He marked 50 years as a F1 boss in 2019 to become the longest serving supremo in the sport.

Family, Wife And Daughter

In 1967, Williams met Virginia Berry. In 1974, they tied the knot. They gave birth to two sons, Jonathan and Jamie, while Claire was their daughter, who went on to become the deputy team principal of his future Formula One outfit Williams Grand Prix Engineering.

Williams has been confined to a wheelchair since he was paralysed in a vehicle accident in France on March 8, 1986.
