Head To Head: 1-1

These players have faced off twice before, and each time they have split the victories. Badosa got her revenge earlier this year at Wimbledon after Kvitova won their first match at the 2020 Australian Open.

Prediction

In the 2022 Ostrava Open’s second round on Wednesday, October 5, World Number four Paula Badosa will compete against 20th-ranked Petra Kvitova.

Her recent performances are what would have left Badosa perplexed, especially since she had just recently climbed to a career-high position of World Number Two. The 24-year-old Spanish player has since gone on to lose five of her last six matches, including a loss in the second round of the US Open. The only victory was over Lesia Tsurenko. It was considerably different for Badosa at the beginning of the year because she started the campaign with a championship victory in Sydney and had a 17-6 win-loss record over the first three months. Since then, things have gotten worseโ€”more so since she started playing hard court tennis again.

The fourth-ranked Badosa may be experiencing a brief phase or a slight glitch, in which case a return to form is likely imminent. Unluckily, she decides to take on a wily veteran.

Kvitova needed some time to get going after her comeback from her fourth-round appearance at the US Open, but she eventually defeated Bernarda Pera in three sets in her first match here. In her 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Pera, Kvitova played for two hours and eight minutes on the court.

Kvitova won 65% of those points, compared to her opponent’s 33% of second serve points and her own 50% of first serve points, demonstrating her ability to escape the jail with her second serves.

After both players earned 13 break points and broke the other player five times, there wasn’t much more to pick between them in the end. When it truly mattered, Kvitova dominated the first and third sets. It’s fascinating to note that, despite Kvitova being the clear favourite, Badosa is capable of challenging the Czech.
