Head To Head: 2-0

Both of their previous encounters one in 2019 and one earlier this year took place at the Rogers Cup. Tomljanovic retired from the match at 1-4 in the first one, while Swiatek dropped just three games in the second one for the victory.

Prediction

Iga Swiatek, the current world No. 1, and Ajla Tomljanovic, an Australian, will square off on Wednesday in the second round of the 2022 Ostrava Open.

Swiatek may be a little rusty because it has been a long since she played competitive tennis on the court. But the last time Swiatek participated in a match, it ended in a straight-set victory that enabled her to capture her third Grand Slam championship. The entire year, Swiatek has also been in that kind of shape.

With the exception of a brief period of four events, the Pole’s win-loss record of 6-4, she has been tenacious. Swiatek has won seven titles this year, including two majors, as titles have been coming in an alarmingly regular fashion.

Even though Margaret Court holds the record for the most championships won in a single WTA season with 20, Swiatek is still far from that mark. A couple more victories in this area would put her on the same list as players like Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova.

The World Number 34 Tomljanovic is coming off an amazing victory over Zhang Shuai in the first round, which was required to advance through the qualifiers to enter the main draw of this championship. In an hour and twelve minutes, the Australian easily defeated Zhang, 6-3, 6-3, to move to 27-23 overall on win-loss records. This has also helped raise her standing to a career high, giving her a chance to unseat the current world number one.

It won’t be simple because Tomljanovic has never previously defeated a player in the top five rankings. However, the Australian has had success in the past against other top-10 players.

Swiatek may have been sidelined for a time, but that shouldn’t be a worry as she faces Tomljanovic and is favourite to win this match without dropping a set.
