After parting company with Gary Rowett, Millwall is seeking a new next manager and bookmakers are giving odds on a number of former Blues managers

After four years, Gary Rowett departs from Millwall.

On Wednesday evening, the Lions announced they had fired Gary Rowett, who had been the manager of Millwall for one of the longest periods in the Championship. Rowett, who has been in charge at The Den for nearly four years, had been the second-longest-serving manager in the division, trailing only Coventry City’s Mark Robins, until the parties reached a mutual decision that he would step down.

The manager stated that it just felt right to part ways despite the squad being in 15th place in the Championship and being only three points off of the playoff spots.

Immediately following Neil Harris’ resignation, Rowett was named manager in October 2019. Millwall recognized that they had improved under the 49-year-old, noting that he had “led the club to top-half finishes in each campaign, regularly challenging for a place in the playoffs along the way”.

Official statement

“Millwall Football Club can confirm that it has mutually agreed to part ways with first-team manager Gary Rowett,” read a club statement. James Berylson, the club’s chairman, appreciated Gary’s efforts throughout his time in charge and wished him the best of luck as he left the club after four years.

Paul Robinson, a former defender for Birmingham City, will now help caretaker Adam Barrett while a “comprehensive recruitment process” has already begun. Rowett, who has also coached Derby County, Stoke, and Blues, will now look for his next task.

John Eustace is one of the front-runners for the new Millwall manager

The Lions’ hunt for a replacement has unavoidably sparked speculation about who that replacement may be. Bookmakers are currently offering the odds, which are accurate as of this writing, and a number of well-known names are among them.

Currently, former Blues manager Wayne Rooney’s replacement John Eustace is the second favourite, with former Shrewsbury manager Steve Cotterill coming in fourth. Mark Kennedy, his former assistant manager, and Lee Bowyer are also mentioned.
