After taking over as captain of the Reds from Steven Gerrard eight years ago, Henderson has now reconnected with the legendary Liverpool player at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq. When Gerrard took over as the team’s manager in early July, he was eager to send Henderson, a 33-year-old midfielder, to the Middle East.
The England international was anticipated to decide on his future this week, and on July 26, Henderson announced his impending departure from Liverpool in an emotional Instagram post. Just over a month after vice-captain James Milner left for Brighton, his departure (which the club officially confirmed a day later) signifies a change of leadership at Anfield.
The Reds are about 8/1 favourites to win the Premier League title next season, so the captaincy decision could be crucial to a title run. After Henderson left the team, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson are among the contenders to replace him as captain of Liverpool.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, 24, may be chosen by manager Jurgen Klopp if he wants a player to guide the team for perhaps another eight years.
Klopp has plenty of international experience at his disposal despite the loss of Henderson and the departure of Milner, which might present a challenging decision when choosing the club’s future captain.

Virgil van Dijk seems to be the obvious choice to succeed Henderson given that he frequently wore the armband for Liverpool last season while the former Sunderland star and Milner weren’t on the pitch. On football betting websites, the Dutch defender—who also serves as captain of his nation—is the 1/2 favourite to become the new captain of Liverpool.
