On Twitter, Fake Country ‘Listenburg’ Goes Viral

On October 31, 2022, a French Twitter user posted a picture of a modified map of Europe with a red arrow on it. He stated in the caption that he is sure Americans don’t even know the name of that country. “Je suis sûr que les Américains ne connaissent même pas le nom de ce país.”

The arrow was designed to deceive Americans, who are stereotypically weak at understanding European geography, by pointing to a fictitious nation that had been added to the side of Portugal. It has received an astounding 111,000 likes, and others in France swiftly picked up the meme and started deceiving internet users by using a fictitious country that doesn’t exist.
