The Lanka Premier League, which has significantly gained momentum and popularity, has chosen a player auction format for the second consecutive year to enable teams to prepare their squads for the upcoming edition. In the initial three editions, players underwent selection through a player draft.

On Friday, the Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the auction date for 2024 LPL. Additionally, they confirmed that the tournament will run from 1st July through 21st July across different cities of the country.

Notably, the LPL 2024 auction will take place on May 21, 2024, at Hotel Shangri-La, Colombo, commencing at 12:00pm local time. Each team in LPL 2024 has the flexibility to maintain a squad size ranging from a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 24 players, with a requirement of six overseas players per squad and the mandatory inclusion of an under-23 Sri Lankan player in the playing XI.
More than 500 players from 24 cricket-playing nations have submitted their entries for the upcoming fifth edition of LPL 2024. Traditional cricketing powerhouses such as Pakistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, and Afghanistan, along with other ICC full member nations, are represented.
Among the key players registered are Tamim Iqbal, Tim Southee, Rassie Van Der Dussen, Jimmy Neesham, Mushfiqur Rahim, Reeza Hendricks, Rilee Rossouw, Shai Hope, Taskin Ahmed, Lungi Ngidi. Naseem Shah, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Colin Munro, Ish Sodhi, Mark Chapman, Jason Behrendorff, Andre Fletcher, Oshane Thomas, Keemo Paul and Fabian Allen, Usman Khawaja, Tabraiz Shamsi, Evin Lewis, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Reece Topley, Iftikhar Ahmad, Mohammad Nawaz, Gulbadin Naib, and Ibrahim Zadra.
Undoubtedly, these players will be aiming to represent one of the five teams competing in LPL 2024: B-love Kandy, Galle Titans, Jaffna Kings, Colombo Strikers, and Dambulla Aura. In the previous LPL 2023 season, B-love Kandy emerged victorious by defeating Dambulla Aura in the final match. The grand finale of LPL 2024 is set for July 21, with all playoff matches scheduled to occur at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Star Sports Network holds the broadcasting rights for the LPL auction in 2023 in India. However, the event will not air on television in the country; instead, it will exclusively stream live on the Hotstar app and website. Additionally, the event will be live-streamed on the official YouTube channel of Sri Lanka Cricket.
