The businessman-turned-cricket administrator, who had cordial relationships with a number of politicians always yearned for the spotlight, whether it was during his time as the IPL chairman or when he was forced to relocate to London in 2013 as a result of several high-profile lawsuits.
Fame And Controversies Of Lalit Modi
With name and celebrity also came controversies. But the 56-year-old persisted in showing off his wealth, flying around in private jets and allegedly at one point hiring the daughter of wanted industrialist Vijay Mallya as his personal assistant.
The identity of one Laila Mahmood also arose after Lalit Modi’s IPL scandal was revealed, following complaints from Kochi franchise representatives to the BCCI in 2010 that he had pressured them into giving up the franchise.
Later, it was purportedly revealed that the woman was Modi’s personal assistant and also Mallya’s stepdaughter.
Lalit Modi’s Suspension and Exile
Modi moved to London and proceeded to defend his suspension there after being suspended by the BCCI in 2013 after the high-flying administrator was accused of bypassing the IPL governing council when making decisions, among other 22 accusations.
The Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) was violated to the tune of INR 890 million, INR 2.43 billion was paid to Cricket South Africa (CSA) for the 2009 IPL in violation of FEMA, and INR 80 million was paid to World Sports Group (WSG) by Multi Screen Media (MSM) as facilitation fees to withdraw from the telecast correctly. Soon, he and other BCCI officials also found themselves involved in numerous other lawsuits.
However, he remained in the public eye the entire time, travelling in showy vehicles and mixing with the powerful.
New chapter in Lalit Modi’s life
Given his lifestyle, it wasn’t shocking to learn that Lalit Modi was dating Sushmita Sen, a well-known Bollywood actress and 1994 Miss Universe winner.
In a tweet on Thursday, Lalit Modi referred to Sen as his better half, sending his followers into a frenzy as some wondered if the two were already wed.
