By the time he was 20, Jonathan David had gained a lot of experience in league as well as major European competitions. An attacking-midfielder of huge potential and talent, David is one such player who can be used in different positions in different ways.
Jonathan David Football Career
David had joined Belgian club Gent back in 2018 and in the First Division A he displayed outstanding attacking qualities, great defending skills and possessed good ball retention abilities. His professional debut was one to remember as he scored a goal against Zulte Waregem in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw for his team.
Not too long after his debut, David came on as a second-half substitute in a Europa League Third Round Qualifier against Jagiellonia Bialystok and found the back of the net in the 85th minute to seal a win for his side.
After remaining consistent across other games and continuing his goal-scoring streak, David started getting offers from big clubs in the January 2020 transfer window. At that time, the 21-year old’s value was estimated to be that of 20 million Euros.
Making him the most expensive Canadian transfer to date, it was Ligue 1 club Lille who signed David on August 11, 2020 on a five-year contract. The fee for David was 30 million Euros and the Canadian forward scored his first goal for the French club on November 22 against Lorient in what was resulted in a 4-0 victory for Lille.
He went on to score a goal in a 2-1 away win against Angers on May 23, which ultimately led to Lille being crowned the champions of Ligue 1 2020-21 season.
