Less than two weeks have passed since Steve Nash was dismissed and suspended before the announcement. Ime Udoka, the head coach of the Boston Celtics, rapidly became known as a “frontrunner” for the position. Since 2016, when general manager Sean Marks was hired, Vaughn, 47, has served as an assistant coach with the Nets.

Vaughn, the team’s sixth head coach since the Nets relocated to Brooklyn in 2012, has far more NBA coaching experience than an assistant. He played point guard for 12 seasons in the NBA, coached the Orlando Magic from 2012 to 2015, and then took over as the interim coach of the Brooklyn Nets in 2020 when Kenny Atkinson was dismissed.
