The gap at the top widened up as Max Verstappen edged out Lewis Hamilton at the Styrian Grand Prix on Sunday to take pole
For Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, the last month in the Formula 1 has been an extremely dreary time.
From controlling both the Drivers and Constructors Standings 2021 in the onset of the season to now looking to erase a massive deficit as they chase Red Bull, Mercedes are well behind the speed. And the team faltered once again as Lewis Hamilton could only manage to once again come second best to Max Verstappen.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen Dominates Lewis Hamilton
Max Verstappen’s triumph at the Styrian Grand Prix opened up a massive 18 point gap atop of the Drivers Standings whilst Red Bull are now 40 clear of Mercedes in the Constructors standings. While Lewis Hamilton did manage to mitigate some of the damage done on Sunday by taking home the fastest lap bonus point, it was far from enough in his hunt for the glistening drivers’ title.
Finishing 35 seconds clear of Hamilton, Verstappen was sensational in every department of the race today. While a late pit spot did allow Hamilton to take home the fastest lap, he was chasing Verstappen in every other facet on the day.
Lewis Hamilton Rues Styrian Grand Prix Performance
Hamilton admitted that it was far from a perfect day as he admitted the Red Bull car was clearly faster than his. He was also left lost for reason on how Red Bull were managing to outdo Mercedes but alluded the reason to Red Bull’s long runs being way better.
Hamilton once again also urged Mercedes to make upgrades to the car if the side was to have any chance of coming out hammer and tongs in the remainder of the season.
“It was a bit of a lonely race really,” said Hamilton.
“I was trying to keep up with those guys but the speed they have, they have obviously made some improvements over the last couple of races and it was impossible to keep up.
“We need to find a performance, we need an upgrade of some sort, we need to push,” he continued.
While Hamilton was dissuaded with his finish, the British driver was pleased at his team’s overall performance and the points Mercedes managed to take home.
