The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organizes the auctions each year across multiple days.
Each franchise must sign a minimum of 18 players and a maximum of 25 in their squad, out of which eight players should be overseas players.
IPL 2025 Mega Auction date and venue
Notably, the upcoming IPL auction in 2025 will be a ‘Mega Auction’. Each Mega Auction takes place every three years, where teams get to change their team from the core. As of now, the BCCI have not announced the date and venue for the mega auction.
IPL auction 2024 franchise budgets
Each franchise in the IPL will get a budget of INR 100 Crore to build the best possible team. While teams do not need to use up the entire budget, they need to spend at least 75 percent (INR 75 crore) towards players. Moreover, franchises can spend around 30–40 percent of their budget on acquiring the top five players.
IPL 2025 auction different player categories
Given below are the different player categories at the IPL auctions:
Categories | Description |
Capped Players | Indian players who have represented the country’s senior team in any format at least once |
Uncapped players | Indian domestic players who play first-class but never represented India |
Non-Indian/Foreign/Overseas players | Capped, uncapped, or associate cricket nation from neighbouring countries |
Teams can bring in players from any category, but they can have only a maximum of eight foreign players. Moreover, teams are allowed to field only four players at one time.
IPL 2025 player retention policies
Given below are the player retention policies for the upcoming IPL 2025:
- Each franchise can hold on to five players as a part of the pre-auction retention process
- Teams can retain only three Indian-capped players, two overseas and one uncapped Indian player
- Each franchise can use the RTM option on players that match a bid during the auction to retain the player
