Prediction
In the quarterfinals of the 2022 AGEL Open on Friday, three-time Major champion Iga Swiatek will compete against qualifier Caty McNally.
Swiatek had a bye in the first round and then met Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round. The World No. 1 got the match underway with a victory, taking the opening set 3-0. The Australian, who had been playing well herself, returned, though, and she immediately tied the score. Then, in the ninth game of the set, Tomljanovic had a couple break opportunities, but Swiatek was able to hold them off. The Australian was on the verge of winning the match at 6-5 when the World No. 1 broke her service and took the first set.
Each player held serve after the other to start the second set after exchanging service breaks. Tomljanovic decided to quit when the score was 7-5, 2-2 because he had already hurt himself and didn’t want to become worse. Swiatek thus went to the quarterfinals.
To guarantee her spot in the main draw at Ostrava, Caty McNally successfully navigated the qualification rounds. Following a straightforward victory over Anna Blinkova in the opening round, she faced off against local favourite Karolina Muchova.
It was rather one-sided because McNally won the opening set with just one game lost. While serving, the American occasionally encountered difficulties, but she never lost her composure and was able to bounce back. Muchova gained an early break in the second set to go up 3-0, but she lost her advantage very fast. Following that, the Czech won another break of serve, and this time he held onto it until the end of the set to win. Muchova broke her rival’s serve once more to start the deciding set. Following this, McNally’s fortunes changed for the better, and she won six straight games to take the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
McNally has a reliable forehand and also slices his backhand well. She also doesn’t think twice about moving on or finishing her words. She has the tools to annoy the Pole, but it will be very difficult to do it frequently throughout a match. It is quite unlikely that McNally will surprise everyone by winning despite the fact that Swiatek has been on a roll this year despite McNally’s talent.
