The well-known author and filmmaker Gita Mehta died suddenly on Saturday in New Delhi. Mehta, who passed away at the age of 80, was Biju Patnaik’s daughter and the sister of Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha.

Gita Mehta is best known for her outstanding documentary “Dateline Bangladesh” and her coverage of the Bangladesh Liberation War for NBC in 1971. Expressing his condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted,
I am saddened by the passing away of noted writer Smt. Gita Mehta Ji. She was a multifaceted personality, known for her intellect and passion towards writing as well as filmmaking. She was also passionate about nature and water conservation. My thoughts are with @Naveen_Odisha Ji and the entire family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.

Who is Gita Mehta?
Gita Mehta was a well-known Indian-American writer and documentary filmmaker. She has been in the news because she passed away at the age of 80.
She was born in 1943 in Delhi, British India. Her father’s name is Bijayananda Patnaik, aka Biju Patnaik, and her mother’s name is Gyan Patnaik. She has one elder brother, Prem Patnaik, and one younger brother, Naveen Patnaik. While Prem is a Delhi-based industrialist, Naveen is currently serving as the chief minister of Odisha.
Gita Mehta attended boarding school at the age of 3. Later, she attended Girton College in Cambridge, the United Kingdom.
She was married, and her husband’s name was Sonny Mehta, a former head of the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house. The couple also has a son named Aditya Singh Mehta.
She died on 16 September 2023 in New Delhi. At the time of her death, she was 60 years old.
Her career
In the early 1970s, Gita Mehta, a talented writer and director, rose to prominence as an NBC television war correspondent covering the Bangladesh liberation war. Her documentary, “Dateline Bangladesh,” received extensive airtime. Her writings on Indian culture, history, and the Western viewpoint included “Karma Cola,” “Raj,” “A River Sutra,” and “Snakes and Ladders.”
Her books received widespread praise; they were translated into 21 different languages and made bestseller lists all over the world. She turned down the Padma Shri award from India in 2019 because she was worried about how close the general elections were to the time of the ceremony.
Gita Mehta’s death cause
She died due to age-related ailments.
