On Friday, the first day of NBA free agency, VanVleet signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the Rockets, a person familiar with the deal told USA TODAY Sports. The individual asked to remain anonymous because he was not permitted to make any public statements before the deal was signed.
The deal is the biggest ever for an undrafted player, and he is the first player to swap teams while under a max contract during this free-agent season. The Raptors wanted to keep VanVleet, but they were only able to offer him $90 million over three seasons due to their financial limitations.
With Toronto, VanVleet developed into an All-Star-caliber guard and was a crucial member of the Raptors’ 2019 championship squad. He was named to the 2022 All-Star squad, and in the previous campaign, he averaged 19.3 points, 7.2 assists, and a 39.3% 3-point shooting percentage.
VanVleet tweeted, “Bet on yourself,” in 2016 and since then, he has signed a two-year, $18 million contract, a four-year, $85 million contract in 2020 (he chose to opt out of the last year for 2023–2024 to become a free agent this offseason), and now a three-year, $130 million contract.
