Reich’s contract had just been extended through the 2026 season a little more than a year ago with him set to earn $9 million in salary this year. His net worth stood at $10 million.

This season, the Colts are the second team to fire its head coach.

On October 10, the Carolina Panthers dismissed Matt Rhule. Chuck Pagano was replaced as Indianapolis’ head coach by Reich in 2018. Over the previous four and a half seasons, he guided the Colts to a regular season record of 40-33-1 and two postseason appearances. The Colts rotated through seven starting quarterbacks during that time.

Things have turned sour for the Colts.

The team’s regular-season debut was a tie against Houston Texans and a defeat versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. Indy went on to win three of its following four games, but since then, things have turned sour.

After the Colts’ Week 7 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Matt Ryan, who they acquired in an offseason trade, was benched. Sam Ehlinger made his NFL debut against the Washington Commanders in Week 8, and the team went on to lose once more.

After losing to the Commanders, the Colts fired offensive coordinator Marcus Brady, but in what turned out to be Frank Reich’s final game, the team struggled once more against the New England Patriots. In a rout loss, Ehlinger and the Colts’ offence managed only 121 total yards and gave up nine sacks.

The Colts are currently in worst place in the NFL in terms of offensive DVOA (-29.4%) and points per game (14.7) through nine weeks. The Colts’ upcoming game is at Las Vegas versus the Raiders. Josh McDaniels, the head coach of the Raiders, initially agreed to lead the Colts in 2018, but later decided to return as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator, which allowed the Colts to employ Reich in the first place.

Who will be selected as the new head-coach?

Peyton Manning is the favourite to become the Colts’ new head coach, according to Nate Atkins of the Indianapolis Star. Coach Jim Harbaugh of Michigan is tied for second place behind Peyton Manning and is another former Colts quarterback whose name most football fans will recognise.

The Bovada bookmaker presently gives Manning +475 chances of becoming the Colts’ next head coach. Mike Kafka of the New York Giants, Harbaugh, and Kellen Moore of the Dallas Cowboys are his closest competitors at +500.
