Bad driving in F1 is punishable by a penalty and points on your racing licence, with 12 points in a year resulting in a race ban, however know what are reprimands and the list for 2022
Reprimands, on the other hand, are a system that penalises bad behaviour both on and off the track.
In F1, What is a reprimand?
A reprimand is a sanction given to a driver for an infraction that does not warrant a penalty; think of it as a slap on the wrist. The reprimands are then classified as either driving or non-driving related offences.
Pit lane offences, a very close call with other drivers, and impeding in practice sessions are examples of driving-related incidents. In general, things happen on the track.
Non-driving offences are less common, but they do occur. In 2021, Sebastian Vettel and three other drivers were chastised and fined for not removing their “we race as one” t-shirts during the Hungarian national anthem.
What happens if there are too many?
According to current sporting regulations, any driver who receives five of these reprimands in a season will receive a ten-place grid penalty at that event or the next race if their final reprimand is issued during the Grand Prix.
At least four of these reprimands must also be for driving violations. In addition, the number of reprimands has been increased from three to five for 2022.
Has a Driver Ever Been Charged for Too Many Reprimands?
Mark Webber was given a ten-place grid drop for the Korean Grand Prix in 2013 after receiving three reprimands when Fernando Alonso gave him an unusual lift back to the pitlane!
This is the most recent list of reprimands issued to each driver.
