The first Sprint race of the season at the Baku City Circuit on Saturday featured plenty of action, with Max Verstappen and George Russell exchanging punches on and off the track before offering conflicting perspectives. Verstappen started the 17-lap race from third place on the grid, but Russell cornered him as soon as the lights went out. The two then engaged in a wheel-to-wheel battle through the first three turns. Verstappen lost the lead following some contact at Turn 2 and was forced to move to the outside of Turn 3, where he crashed into the wall. However, he gained it back after a restart under the safety car, completing the podium.

Red Bull came into the Azerbaijan race weekend as the team to beat with three wins and three pole positions through the first three rounds of 2023. But on Friday, Charles Leclerc won pole for the third time in a row in Baku, putting an end to that streak. Leclerc followed it up on Saturday with another pole position, but he was unable to fend off Sergio Perez in the actual Sprint, finishing a respectable second place behind Max Verstappen.
