Max Verstappen rode the waves of a sea of orange as he secured a third-straight pole position for Austrian GP Sprint Race and ensured he would start first for Saturday’s Sprint at the Red Bull Ring but Sergio Perez wasn’t as delighted with his P4 showing. In Q3 of Friday’s qualifying, both Mercedes drivers crashed out, leaving just enough time for a last sprint to the finish line. Verstappen edged out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.029s, electrifying the audience of thousands of fans cheering for the defending champion.

The lone Grand Prix on the F1 schedule that takes place in Austria is the Austrian Grand Prix, which is held at Spielberg on a track that is constructed around the Styrian Alps. Power is required in the first half of the circuit, and once the drivers start to descend, a series of fast turns come into view, notably the thrilling Rindt right-hander, named after Austria’s first F1 champion. Max Verstappen of Red Bull is now in first place in the drivers’ standings with 181 points. His teammate Sergio Perez comes in second with 147 points, followed by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in third with 138 points, 9 points behind the Mexican.

Carlos Sainz qualified in third place for the Austrian Grand Prix’s Sprint race tomorrow, denying him a second consecutive pole position. But as he anticipated what he thinks would be a successful weekend, the Spaniard declared that “there’s everything to play for.” Sainz won his first pole position last week at Silverstone, and he nearly repeated his feat at the British GP in Austria, finishing just 0.082s slower than pole-sitter Max Verstappen’s pace. Sainz, meanwhile, chose to focus on his starting position for tomorrow’s Sprint rather than his qualifying performance.
