#BoycottBrahmastra trends on Twitter after Offensive Comments of lead actors resurface
How boycott trend has impacted Bollywood?
Expectations are high for the Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt-starring film Brahmastra after the box office debuts of Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan were underwhelming. The Ayan Mukerji-directed film is tipped to be the biggest motion picture of Indian cinema with its spectacular VFX and innovative storytelling centred on the Astraverse universe fusing aspects from the Hindu mythology, and it is anticipated to become the biggest Bollywood blockbuster of the year.
Brahmastra is also being ridiculed online, similar to how the two recently released movies experienced the boycott movement on Twitter following the discovery of old, contentious statements made by its star performers. The main causes of the #BoycottBrahmastra trend include reportedly a resurfaced scene from Ranbir Kapoor’s previous movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Amitabh Bachchan calling out “ghoonghat” on his show Kaun Banega Crorepati, Karan Johar supporting the movie, and the movie’s poster.
Why Brahmastra is facing an uphill battle against Boycott Trend?
Netizens are complaining that a brief clip from the Ranbir and Deepika Padukone film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, in which Bunny urges Naina to make out “behind a temple,” offends Hinduism. Coincidentally, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was the last movie Ayan Mukerjee directed before making his directorial comeback with Brahmastra.
On Twitter, people also criticized Amitabh Bachchan for a past statement in which, he opined that “ghoonghat” is regressive. Amitabh made the statement to a women contestant while he was acting as the host in quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati. Netizens also asserted that the Sholay actor has not criticized burkha or hijab worn by Muslim women but insulted “ghoonghat” culture.
Another justification given by online users for avoiding watching Brahmastra is that Karan Johar, whose production company Dharma Productions financed the movie, is under fire for allegedly encouraging nepotism. Even the movie’s poster has offended certain Hindus, who claim that Ranbir Kapoor’s character Shiva is making fun of Lord Shiva by dressing Trishul in jeans and a shirt. December of last year saw the debut of the poster.
