The fight pit match scheduled for the WWE Extreme Rules 2022 is the first match featuring in the main roster.
What Is A Fight Pit Match?
The fight pit match concept was originally introduced during the behind-closed-doors era of WWE back in 2020.
It was originally played off of Matt Riddle‘s MMA and UFC history. The first ever fight pit match featured Matt Riddle back in May 2020 against Timothy Thatcher.
This will be the first time that the concept will feature on the main roster of WWE. The Fight Pit match features a structure, which sees the ring surrounded by cage match-like walls.
The structure also features a balcony/platform on top of the walls where the competitors can walk around.
Match Rules
Most types of cage matches in the WWE features competitors win via escaping the cage or pinfall. However, that is not possible in a fight pit match.
Since it was created with the idea of this being an MMA-styled concept, competitors can only win via a knockout or submission.
WWE Fight Pit match 2022 competitors
This year’s WWE Extreme Rules Live Event will feature Seth Rollins and Matt Riddle competing in a Fight Pit match.
Interestingly, the fact that Seth Rollins who does not have any history as an MMA fighter will compete in the match makes for exciting results.
Rollins is a completely different breed when it comes to sports entertainment. So far, Riddle and his original opponent in the match type, Timothy Thatcher, both have MMA fighting history. Thus, their previous fights saw several elements of the cage-fighting style.
So bringing in Rollins as Riddle’s competitor will surely spice things up. Moreover, Rollins and Riddle have an ongoing feud, which has got ever more personal on television.
Bringing in a cage match into that feud where there is no escape and both men can go hell for leather is certainly appropriate.
Fans should gear up for the one of a kind match up as this could end up being one of the best matches of the year on the WWE main roster.
