The finalised 2023–24 Championship playoff system pits the four teams against one another for the last promotion spot to the Premier League for the 2024–25 campaign. While Leeds United came in third, Southampton came in fourth, West Brom came in fifth, and Norwich City came in sixth, Leicester City won the Championship and Ipswich Town placed second to guarantee the two automatic promotion slots.

How much do the Championship playoff winners win?

There was a huge increase in prize money in 2023 for the winners of the playoffs of the tournament. The English Football League’s official website suggested that promotion to the Premier League will allow an additional £178 million to the playoff winner over the course of the next three seasons.

According to Deloitte Sports Business Group, reaching the top flight via the Championship play-off final in 2022-23 earned the winner £290m if the club avoids relegation after their first season in the Premier League and one season in the Premier League brought in additional revenues of at least £90m.

Ahead of the 2020 Championship play-off final, a Deloitte report said that the winning team might get a sum ranging from £135 million to £265 million. This would rely on their ability to avoid being immediately demoted from the Premier League. 

A look at how much the Premier League clubs win following television rights 

According to official figures for the 2020–21 season, the 20 Premier League teams split an incredible £2.5 billion in television money. All clubs, regardless of position, were guaranteed a minimum of £5.9 million in central commercial payments, £47.5 million in foreign TV money, and £31.4 million in equal share payments.

This came to almost £84.8 million for each squad. In comparison, lower league teams’ TV rights revenue for a season only amounts to approximately £8 million for Championship clubs.
