Prediction

Elena Rybakina and Ana Bogdan will face each other on WTA court for the very first time today at Slovenia Open 2022 semifinals.

Ana Bogdan of Romania defeated second-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 to go to the semifinals in Slovenia after saving seven of ten break points.

On the other hand, Elena Rybakina, the third-seeded player, who will next face Bogdan, the Kazakhstan’s Wimbledon champion won the match in a walkover after Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko withdrew before it started.

After winning their first title at that level, first-time Grand Slam champions frequently experience some post-championship remorse. Uncertainty surrounds the existence of Elena Rybakina’s. Prior to the US Open, the Kazakh had a 4–3 record, although the losses were against very deserving opponents (Daria Kasatkina, Cori Gauff, Madison Keys). Rybakina’s shape didn’t start to droop until much later. Her first-round loss at New York came to Clara Burel, while her first-round struggle here came against Laura Siegemund.

Ana Bogdan, meanwhile, was on fire right before the US Open, winning a WTA 125K competition in Iasi and making it to a WTA 250 final in Warsaw. The Romanian was forced to participate in the US Open qualifying round and was unexpectedly eliminated by Fernanda Contreras Gomez. Without a doubt, Bogdan has performed admirably to advance to the semifinals, defeating opponents as dangerous as Beatriz Haddad Maia and Ajla Tomljanovic (quarterfinalists at the US Open) (Toronto runner-up).

The Romanian, however, will probably find it difficult to compete in this one on her own terms. The 29-year-old lacks the strength to compete with Rybakina, despite having good ground speed. If the Kazakh is hitting well, she will be in control and determine how the match will end. Bogdan won’t give up easily, though, and she moves well enough to force her to play a lot of extra balls. It’s a challenging matchup and a chance for the recently crowned Wimbledon champion to show she’s at the top of her game.
