The Lost Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham is making headlines after the Lakers dismissed him following two seasons, during which he posted a 90-74 regular-season record.

In a statement released by the team, general manager Rob Pelinka acknowledged Ham’s contributions over his tenure and highlighted the success the team had under his leadership, including reaching the Western Conference finals last season.

“We are grateful for Darvin’s hard work and positivity. It was a tough call, but we believe this move is in the best interest of our organization after a thorough review of the season. The Lakers remain committed to delivering championship-level basketball to our fans,” Pelinka said.

The Lakers ended this past season with a 47-35 record, finishing eighth in the Western Conference. They beat the New Orleans Pelicans in the play-in tournament to earn the seventh seed but were eliminated by the Denver Nuggets in the first round, 4-1.

Denver had also defeated the Lakers in the conference finals last season on their way to winning their first NBA championship.

Despite the Lakers’ victory in the NBA in-season tournament with a win over the Indiana Pacers on December 9, the team hit a rough patch, losing 9 out of twelve games, and rumors of discord between the players and Ham began to surface.

The 50-year-old head coach Ham was hired on June 3, 2022, to replace Frank Vogel, who was let go after a disappointing 33-49 season in 2021-22, two years after the Lakers’ NBA championship win.

What Did Ham Say?

Chants of “Fire Darvin Ham” were heard during Game 3 of the series against the Nuggets, with Lakers star Anthony Davis expressing concerns about the team’s lack of coherence on both offense and defense.

After the series clinching loss in Game 5, Ham reflected on his time with the team: “It’s been quite a journey these past two years. Quite a journey,” he said.
