On Saturday, the Indian men’s table tennis team destroyed Northern Ireland 3-0 and secured a spot in the quarterfinals of 2022 Commonwealth Games against Bangladesh after their convincing group stage performance.

India take 3-0 lead over Northern Ireland

In the opening match against Northern Ireland, Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai defeated James Skelton and Owen Cathcart with a score of 3-1 (11-3, 9-11, 11-6, and 11-1). Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, India’s top-ranked male table tennis player, was rested for the match, thus Sanil Shetty stepped up and defeated Paul Mccreery in the singles match with a score of 3-0 (11-5, 15-13, 11-6) to give India a 2-0 lead. In the last match of tie, Harmeet Desai defeated Owen Cathcart 3-2 (5-11, 11-9, 12-14, 11-3, 11-6) after mounting a comeback despite falling behind 2-1 at one point.
With a 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland, the Indian men’s table tennis team also maintained their perfect record in the group round. On Sunday, India will play Bangladesh in the quarterfinals.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games’ men’s team table tennis competition will take place at Birmingham, England’s National Exhibition Centre, from July 29 to August 2. Indian men’s team defeated Northern Ireland in their final group stage encounter on July 30 to clinch first place in the group.
