2022 BWF World Championships Women’s Singles First Round Draw, Fixtures, Players List
Yamaguchi Akane, the current world number one in the women’s singles, is seeded first as she aims to win back-to-back championships. After her heartbreaking quarterfinal exit at her home Olympic Games, it will be the Japanese player’s second chance to shine at home. The 25-year-old will receive a bye in the first round along with the other 16 seeds, but she won’t have an easy path to the championship match because she is placed in the same bracket of draw as three-time world champion Carolina Marin.
Olympic gold medalist Marin from Rio 2016 was injured and was unable to participate in the previous competition, which was held in her hometown of Huelva. A quarterfinal matchup between the current world champion and the three-time world champion appears highly likely, barring any major upsets. Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei is seeded second and is set to meet Mia Blichfeldt in the third round. She may potentially face another home favourite, Okuhara Nozomi, who is ranked sixth, in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Chen Yu Fei, the Olympic champion from Tokyo, will lead China’s quest to recapture the women’s singles championship they last claimed in 2011. An Seyoung of South Korea and PV Sindhu of India are seeded third and seventh, respectively, and if they perform to their capabilities, they might face off in the quarterfinals.
