PV Sindhu, the defending champion, defeated Martina Repiska of Slovakia 21-7, 21-9 to get the BWF World Championships 2021 off to a flying start on Tuesday

No. 7 in the world, Sindhu defeated unseeded Repiska in 24 minutes at the on going BWF World Championship. The two-time Olympic medalist opened on a thrilling note, racing to a 4-1 lead with her strong performance in the competition she won in 2019 — when it was last staged.

Repiska attempted a comeback with two points, but Sindhu held firm, leading 11-4 at the halftime break. She maintained her domination and continued to score points to extend her lead, finally winning the first game in less than 10 minutes.

Sindhu had had a memorable year in 2021, having finished second in the BWF World Tour Finals just a week before and winning her second Olympic medal in August. There are high hopes for India’s ace shuttler at this huge championship, especially in the absence of Spanish legend Carolina Marin, who is out due to injury.
