History of Singapore Open Badminton and BWF Event Status

Since 1929, Singapore has hosted the annual Singapore Open, a badminton competition. Singapore Open has been included in the BWF events framework from 2018 as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 competitions. The competition will be promoted to a Super 750 event in 2023.

The Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) was founded in 1929 with the goal of promoting the game and hosting tournaments. The best athletes were picked to represent Singapore in the regional competitions during the first formal annual open championships, which were held in the same year.

It changed to an open invitation championship in 1960 and continued to be hosted every year until 1973. The competition, named as the Konica Cup from 1987 to 1989, was an invitation-only event for Asian players, and in 1990 it made its debut on the Grand Prix circuit of the International Badminton Federation. The Singapore Open was a BWF Super Series competition in 2007.
