Olympic champion from Rio 2016 Carolina Marin unexpectedly lost in round two to unseeded Danish player Line Kjaersfeldt, losing 19-21, 21-19, 13-21 in 74 minutes. An Se Young of South Korea was defeated by Han Yue of China. 23-21, 18-21, 16-21.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s unseeded Phittayaporn Chaiwan was defeated by seventh-seeded PV Sindhu in 57 minutes, 19-21, 21-9, 21-14. The Chinese Taipeian Tai Tzu Ying, who has a 14-5 head-to-head record against the two-time Olympic medalist, is the next opponent for the Indian.
