In order to qualify for the quarterfinal, Malaysian ace Lee will compete against Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-Yi in the second-round. However, Ng Tze Yong was unable to build on the achievements of his countryman and the 23-year-old Malaysian was eliminated from the competition after falling to Nishimoto Kenta, who won by scores of 17-21, 21-16, 21-13. Unexpectedly, Lakshya Sen defeated world No. 4 Loh Kean Yew in his first-round tie at the 2023 Malaysia Masters, winning 21-10, 16-21, 21-9.

The third-seeded Indonesian Jonathan Christie, who overcame Chi Yu-Jen 16-21, 21-18, & 21-16 in the first round, will face the 28-year-old Japanese player in the second-round. Chou Tien-Chen, the sixth-ranked player in the world, was up against ninth-ranked Indian shuttler Prannoy, who staged an incredible comeback to win by the score of 16-21, 21-13, 21-14 despite losing the opening set.

2023 Malaysia Masters: prize money distribution

As a BWF Super 500 tournament, the Malaysia Masters will reward each singles category winner with prize money of $31,500 from the $420,000 total prize pool. It is confirmed that each singles semifinal loser will only receive $6,090, while the singles runner-up will receive $15,960. Singaporean star Loh Kean Yew will home empty-handed after his surprise first-round loss to Indian prodigy Lakshya Sen.
