The Indonesia Open has been a staple of the international badminton calendar since its beginnings and being a Super 1000 tournament, it is a coveted stage for players and fans. The Indonesia Open’s history, past champions, and Indian players’ performances at the tournament are all detailed below.

History of Indonesia Open Badminton and BWF Event Status

Since 1982, the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) has held an annual badminton event known as the Indonesia Open. It joined the BWF Super Series event in 2007 and was promoted to Super Series Premier in 2011. Following the restructure to the BWF World Tour, it became of only three tournaments granted Super 1000 status in 2018.

For 2022 edition, Indonesia Open will take place as a Super 1000 tournament with a prize pool of $1,200,000. Hence, the Indonesian Open will be a much-anticipated tournament for fans around the world.

Indian Shuttler’s Success Story in Indonesia Open Badminton

At the Indonesia Open, Saina Nehwal became the first Indian shuttler to break the medal draught. That, too, after 28 years, and not just by earning any medal, but gold. Saina Nehwal, the top seed at the time, had a fantastic tournament in 2010. In 2012, Saina Nehwal won the Indonesia Open for the second time, after coming through Japanese, Indonesian, South Korean, and Chinese shuttlers in the competition.

Srikanth is the Indonesian Open’s second Indian winner. He is also the only male Indian player to have achieved this feat. In addition, he won the competition despite being an unseeded competitor. The Indian shuttler shown tremendous bravery and talent in pulling off a major upset in the sport.

Indonesia Open: Most Successful Countries

Since its start, Chinese and Indonesian shuttlers have dominated the Indonesia Open. In the Indonesia Open, China won 47 titles across all categories, while Indonesia earned 85. Meanwhile, India has only won three titles in the Indonesia Open’s history.

The total prize pool for the 2022 Indonesia Open will be US$1,200,000, which is higher than the $850,000 prize pool of 2021 edition Indonesia Open.
