Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund is a German football club that was initially founded in 1909 and competes in the German top division, the ‘Bundesliga’. While the name Borussia comes from the Latin word for Prussia, the club got its name from a sign for Borussia-Brauerei. The sign was an advertisement for a brewery in the city, which was on the wall of a local pub, Zum Wildschutz, where the founders met while forming the team.
Since then, a lot of things about the club has changed starting from the crest to the original blue and white striped kits. However, one thing has remained the same and that is their nickname “BVB”. Find out how the club got its famous BVB nickname below.

Notably, Borussia Dortmund fans refer to their club as ‘BVB’ in short, pronounced in German as ‘bay-fow-bay’. The name stems from the team’s official and lesser-used name, “Ballspielverein (Ball Club) Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund.”. In Germany, whenever an association registers themselves, they are designated as eingetragener Verein, aka ‘e.V.’ or “registered association”. Meanwhile, the ‘09’ points refer to the club being founded in the year 1909.
The BV in BVB comes from the first part of its name Ballspielverein, while the second B standing for Borussia. Ballspielverein in turn is in turn a compound word that combines two existing words ‘Ballspiel’ and ‘Verein’. The word describes the sport that the club competed in during the time of their origin. For Borussia Dortmund, ‘Ballspielverein’ implies that that club are an association specialised in ball sports, particularly in football.
