Galgotias University students protest video and memes go viral on Twitter/X

The Galgotia University is now being humorously called better than “WhatsApp University” by people online after a video of its students being interviewed by a journalist from Aaj Tak became popular.

The students of the Galgotia University had gathered to protest against the proposed ‘inheritance tax’ in the Congress party’s manifesto. This tax aims to take a portion of the wealth from the extremely rich and redistribute it to the country’s poorest.

Critics of Congress have called it the worst economic policy ever made, while the proposal has been misrepresented at political rallies by some leaders who claim that the party plans to take half of everyone’s wealth.

Despite explanations, false claims about the inheritance tax continue to spread on platforms like WhatsApp University. Some students from Galgotia University showed up outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi with signs in Hindi and English. Aaj Tak journalist Ashutosh Mishra questioned the protesting students with simple questions, which they struggled to answer.

Most did not understand what ‘inheritance tax’ really meant. Some were even unable to read the placards they held, with words like ‘Vulture’ and ‘UrbanNaxal’, one of which a student misread as ‘Urban Maxwell’. None of the students seemed aware of the protest’s purpose, and they avoided answering questions.

Response from students

Meanwhile, one of the students named Laxmi Prasad went on X (formerly known as Twitter) and boldly admitted that it was a mistake and the students were unaware of the propaganda behind the event. She claimed that the organizers had promised a meeting with actor and BJP leader Kangana Ranaut.

The student apologized on behalf of the student council for the debacle, which she said was forced on them by the university management under the guise of awarding internal marks for participation.

Responding to users on X, the student further expressed that the whole episode has been stressful as the university is being heavily criticized from all sides.

But just a few hours ago, the same student commented on X while abusing and insulting people who didn’t like the video.
