The BRICS Games are an annual multi-sport event organised by the countries that comprise the BRICS economic bloc. The event is usually organised by the country chairing the organisation that year.
The first BRICS Games were hosted by China in Guangzhou in 2017 followed by India in 2021. China also hosted the 2022 edition however, because of the COVID 19 virus explosion, the games had to be held in online mode. This year’s edition will be hosted by South Africa while the next will be held in Russia in 2024.
The official opening ceremony of the 5th BRICS Games were held on October 17, organised by the National Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. The ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban. During the ceremony of the event which returned after the pandemic, Russia, India, China, and South Africa paraded while carrying their own flags.
