According to the Boston Police Department, 32-year-old American Lemark Jaramillo was shot dead after he allegedly attempted to attack patrons inside the Boylston Street Chick-fil-A restaurant in Copley Square. His last known residence was in the city’s Roslindale neighbourhood.

Lemark Jaramillo, 32, was shot after he allegedly ran into the restaurant at 569 Boylston St., chasing two people he was attempting to stab with an off duty police officer shooting him dead after Lemark refused to drop his weapon.

Jennifer Geddes who was Lemak’s girlfriend is cherishing her memories with Lemark Jaramillo and she said, “Lemark was a good guy. He didn’t deserve this.”

Geddes said she last saw him days before he was shot and killed by a Boston police officer at the Chick-fil-A near Copley Square.

“I just feel like he deserves justice, and his family deserves answers. I deserve answers,” she said.

The two had been dating for a decade and Geddes said he was loving and close to her two children. Geddes had however taken a restraining order out against Jaramillo in 2018 after he was charged with assaulting her, telling police he had vandalized her property and pulled out a knife.

Court records from Boston, Quincy and Hull charging Lemak with crimes ranging from vandalism, tagging, trespassing and defacing property to robbing a young woman walking home from the Forest Hills MBTA Station with a switchblade knife in 2010 when he was in high school however, many of the charges were dismissed, or he was found not guilty.

“People make mistakes. We were together a long time. It’s not always perfect, it’s not always good. Everybody has their days, but for somebody to be shot down so many times, it’s senseless,” Geddes said

In addition to expressing gratitude for the police officer who stood up for “innocent bystanders,” the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, which represents victims of violence in the city, also sent its condolences to the victim.

“If we are truly committed to cultivating peace in our city, our response to incidents of violence must be rooted in compassion for all who are grieving,” the institute added. “Our shared humanity demands nothing less.”

Around 5:30 p.m., Lemark Jaramillo led two individuals into the Chick-fil-A. The officer attempted to defuse the situation, but the suspect allegedly refused to cooperate.

Boston 25 News was able to secure surveillance footage that captured the horrifying moments following the gunshot, as patrons ran onto the street.

Inside the restaurant, a witness told Bosto 25 that she heard the police tell the man to put down the knife.

“Put down the knife, sir,” he said. Then, suddenly, he shot him,” the witness recalled. It was noisy. Although not that near, I have heard gunshots previously.

Following the incident, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox both sent condolence messages to Jaramillo’s family, which sparked backlash on social media.

“My condolences and all of our thoughts are with the family of the individual whose life has been lost,” Wu said at a press conference following the shooting. “I’m also thinking about all the people who’ve been impacted here today in one of the busier parts of the city.”

The off-duty cop, who has been placed on leave while an investigation is underway, was also commended by Wu and Cox. The event is being investigated by the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office.
On Monday, the eatery was closed.
