Prediction

In the 2022 Astana Open quarterfinal match on Friday, October 7, World No. 9 Andrey Rublev will face off against Adrian Mannarino, who is ranked 51.

Rublev dominated Zhizhen Zhang in the second round, registering his second unchallenged victory of the competition as he continued to show no concern for his rivals. Rublev triumphed 6-3, 6-2 in a little under an hour to go to the quarterfinals, where he will take on an old adversary.

Similar to how he defeated Laslo Djere, Rublev faced three break points during the match and saved all of them while breaking his opponent three times on the four opportunities he received. The difference in first serve percentages between Rublev and his opponent, 83% to 57%, was what made the difference.

Mannarino’s season has been somewhat up and down, he came into this tournament fresh off of winning the Winston-Salem championship and then went on a three-match losing run. Again, Mannarino has been able to establish a winning pattern and eliminated two favourites.

Despite being an 11/10 underdog going into the match, he began things off with a comeback victory over Stan Wawrinka in the first round. The same thing was done by Mannarino against David Goffin in the second round. After falling behind a set, Mannarino battled back to defeat his opponent 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in two hours and sixteen minutes.

Rublev shouldn’t have too many concerns going into this match, but it does not mean that he should assume his 51st-ranked opponent will be easy to beat. Be prepared for a third set of this.
