Head to Head: 3-0

In their three encounters so far on the tour, Sonego has prevailed in all of them. Bublik defeated the Italian in a game once but it was not on tour level.

Prediction

In the 2022 Moselle Open championship match, Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik, the seventh seed, will take on Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.

Stan Wawrinka’s forced retirement after just three games in the first set on Saturday allowed Alexander Bublik to advance to his third final of the year. The 25-year-old was a finalist in Newport but lost to Maxime Cressy in the championship match. Earlier this year, the Montpellier finalist defeated Alexander Zverev to win his first ATP title.

The Kazakh player had won all three of his previous tournament matches in three sets, but the semifinal only lasted three games since the former World no. 3 Wawrinka had to leave the match after falling behind 1-2.

Bublik, who will compete in his sixth ATP final on Sunday, has increased his season record to 28-22. In Metz, he started his campaign with a victory over French qualifier Evan Furness, winning 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and then he defeated Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round, winning 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3. Bublik defeated fourth seed Holger Rune in the quarterfinal on Friday with scores of 6-3, 5-7, and 6-4. On Sunday, can Bublik defeat Sonego for the first time on the tour and take home a second tour-level victory? Will predict after we we go through his opponent’s form.

Lorenzo Sonego on the other hand, defeated second-seeded Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinal to get to his fifth career tour-level final. The World No. 65 defeated the World No. 10 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to increase his lead to 3-1 on the tour and 4-2 overall. He had an advantage in head-to-head matches going into the match.

Sonego faced zero break points throughout the contest and won 84% of his first serve points. Hurkacz, on the other hand, only managed to score 72% on his first delivery. In the opening set, which was won by the Italian in a tiebreak, neither player faced a break point. Sonego had the only break point of the match in the second set, and he took advantage of it to end Hurkacz’s unbeaten streak in Metz, which had started the year prior when he went on to win the match.

With Saturday’s victory, Sonego’s record now reads 22–24, on Sunday, he will attempt to capture his third career championship. So far in this competition, he hasn’t lost a set. He started out by defeating sixth seed Aslan Karatsev and Gilles Simon in the first round and second round, respectively, before eliminating Sebastian Korda on Friday in the quarterfinals. He will be looking to duplicate the performance once more on Sunday after putting on another strong display on Saturday.

Having won all three of their prior meetings on the tour, Sonego will have the psychological advantage, and a victory on Sunday would keep his spotless record intact.
