Turf 1 is the superior playing surface and as a result of the decision to host part of the T20 World Cup in Oman and the turf 1 venue has been expanded to a 4000 seater capacity as well as having permanent flood lights installed.
The pitch at the Al Amerat Stadium is generally a good one for batting although when playing on a used pitch scoring can become increasingly difficult as was evident in the Oman Pentangular Series.
Oman Cricket announced plans to build an international-standard facility in Al Amarat, some 15 kilometers southeast of Muscat’s city Centre, in July 2008. The property was granted by the Ministry of Sports Affairs, and the remaining funds were to be generated through corporate sponsorship. The project was initially projected to cost 2 million Omani rials (US$5.2 million). Ashraful Haque performed the ceremony to officially open the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium in October 2012.
Al-Amerat Cricket Stadium, which was built in 2012, staged its first international game in 2019, when Bahrain played Saudi Arabia in an IT20. Since then, Muscat has hosted the ACC Western Region T20, the Oman Quadrangular Series, and a Pentangular T20 Series with affiliate teams Oman, Ireland, the Netherlands, Nepal, and Hong Kong in October 2019.
The Al Amerat Turf 1 received significant renovations with the installation of new floodlights and pavilions following the qualifying to host the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. A computerised scoreboard was also installed instead of the traditional one. The stadium hosted six matches, including all three of Oman’s games during the tournament’s first round.
