Aston Martin’s F1 Crew Member Aidan Louw reveals Racist Abuse at Workplace
Aidan, 25, was born to mixed-race parents in South Africa. He worked as a laminator creating components for Sebastian Vettel’s cars at the famous F1 team’s facility in Silverstone in England after moving to the country. He claimed to Sky News that after he joined the group as a supplier’s agency contractor in February of this year, he started to get racist taunts.
The former F1 employee’s admission that he experienced hourly racial abuse from Aston Martin coworkers brought to light the extent of racism present in the F1 organization. Due to his dual citizenship, Aidan carries passports from both South Africa and the United Kingdom. He claimed that he has experienced homophobic taunts as well.
At the age of 16, Aidan began his career in motorsport as a cleaner at the Silverstone track, gathering up beer cups and cleaning the restrooms. Then, after moving up the F1 supply chain, he joined the Williams Formula 1 team, Alpine, and finally McLaren. He claims that he loved working for all three of those teams.
Aston Martin’s Statement and Action after Aidan Louw’s Complaints
In a statement, Aston Martin stated that they take seriously any charges of this improper behavior, fully investigate such claims, and penalize anyone who violates their standards. Aston Martin also added that in this instance, it was reasonable to believe the complainant, and Aidan’s allegations were promptly investigated. In accordance with the team’s zero-tolerance policy, suitable punishments were also implemented.
While negotiations between Mr. Louw and Aston Martin are ongoing, Formula 1 have declined to comment on the sensitive issue, which has been often brought to notice by many drivers and workers.
