Roces, who would have turned 81 on July 28, died on Friday evening, according to her daughter Sen. Grace Poe. Her family’s official statement reads,

With great sadness, we announce the loss of our beloved Jesusa Sonora Poe, whom many of you know as Susan Roces. She passed away peacefully on a Friday evening, May 20, 2022, surrounded by love and warmth, with her daughter Grace, her nephews Joseph and Jeffrey and many of her family and close friends. She lived life fully and gracefully.

Who Was Susan Roces?

Jesusa Purificacion Levy Sonora, popularly known as Sonora, was a well-known Filipino actress and producer. As one of the most senior and experienced performers in the Philippine entertainment business, she was dubbed the “Queen of Philippine Movies.”

On July 29, 1941, she was born in Bacolod to Jesus Tonggoy Sonora and Purificacion Levy. Her mother was a mestiza of French American Jewish origin, while her father was a mestizo of Spanish and Chinese descent.

Roces studied at La Consolacion College (LCC) in Bacolod with a high school diploma in 1956. Her decision to pursue a profession in acting was made during her time at LCC.

Luisa Medel, her third-year high school teacher, saw her potential for public speaking and acting and encouraged her to continue her study in the same field. Roces travelled to Manila after graduating from high school to follow her mentor’s guidance.

Roces is married to Fernando Poe Jr., and they have one adoptive daughter, Grace Poe, who is currently a Senator and the former Chairperson of the MTRCB.

Her Career

Roces made her film debut at the age of eight in the 1952 film Mga Bituin ng Kinabukasan, and went on to star in a number of superhit films. She has also won five FAMAS Awards, including two for Best Actress.

During her early career, she was also selected as a celebrity endorsement for products including Coca-Cola, Lux, Blend 45, and Lavoris. Roces would still feature in television ads for products like RiteMed and Champion in her later years.
