Promoted up the order after the Royals found their innings tottering with four wickets collapsing inside the first 10 overs, Ashwin walked out looking to hold fort from one end. And he and Shimron Hetmyer moved hand in glove, providing wind to the sails of a sinking ship as the raked up a 68 run partnership in unison.
While Ashwin played his part with 28 runs off 22 balls, it was clear that he wasn’t going to be able to up the ante in the tailend of the innings. It was then that he decided to get retired out to allow Riyan Parag to walk out.
As per the ICC’s rules, a batsman can get retired out during a T20 fixture and the umpire has to be informed about the reason for retiring.
“A batter may retire at any time during his/her innings when the ball is dead. The umpires, before allowing play to proceed, shall be informed of the reason for a batter retiring,” states ICC’s 25.4.1 law.
