The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024, India’s premier domestic T20 cricket tournament after the Indian Premier League, is set to take place from November 23 to December 15. Originally launched in 2007 as the Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament, this year marks the 17th edition of the prestigious competition. A total of 38 teams will compete for the title, with Punjab entering as the defending champions.

Punjab, led by Abhishek Sharma’s stellar performances that earned him the Player of the Series award last season, secured their maiden trophy in 2023. Abhishek Sharma will continue to lead the side in 2024, with the team placed in Group A alongside Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Hyderabad, Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Bihar.
The 38 participating teams have been divided into five groups—Groups A, B, and C feature eight teams each, while Groups D and E comprise seven teams each. In the group stage, teams will compete in a round-robin format, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout. The group toppers and the best second-placed team across all groups will directly qualify for the quarter-finals, while the remaining four second-placed teams will battle it out in the RO16.

Tamil Nadu holds the distinction of being the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with three titles to their name. This year’s edition will also serve as a platform for several high-profile Indian cricket stars to gear up for the Indian Premier League 2025 season. Among these are Baroda’s Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya, Bengal’s Mohammed Shami, and Gujarat’s Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi.
