The recent crash on Wednesday was one of the worst aviation accidents to strike the US ever since the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks.
Fatal Black Hawk helicopter crash
Just recently, on Wednesday, January 29, a tragic crash took place between a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines aircraft. The crash killed a total of 67 people, including three troops led by Ryan O’Hara in the helicopter and 64 from the aircraft. The American Airlines aircraft was carrying sixty passengers and four staff members.
According to officials, the flying conditions for the plane were fine upon its arrival from Wichita, Kansas. In fact, President Donald Trump also referred to the catastrophe as “preventable” and went on to imply that air traffic controllers were the reason behind the crash.

Age 29 Ryan O’Hara was a US soldier who recently passed away in a tragic plane crash He was one of the troops that passed away in the mid-air crash in DC Friday night. According to reports, Hara was the Black Hawk helicopter’s crew chief. Following his death, Hara leaves behind his wife and their one-year-old son but their names aren’t known.
The crew chief aboard the Black Hawk involved in the mid-air crash in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night was an alum of Parkview High in Gwinnett County, Georgia according to the school’s MCJROTC and the school organization identified Ryan O’Hara as a former cadet and Class of 2014 alum who was crew chief on the military helicopter that collided with a passenger jet as it approached landing at Reagan National Airport.
Shortly after graduating from Parkview, O’Hara joined the military and the military said the crew on board the Blackhawk helicopter was on a routine training mission.
Chief Warrant Officer 5 Josh Muehlendorf was stationed with Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara in Savannah in 2020 and he called O’Hara a standout soldier and says everyone respected him. “Ryan was one of the most dedicated, disciplined, and committed soldiers I’ve ever worked with,” said CW5 Josh Muehlendorf.
Education
Ryan O’Hara attended Parkview High School, where he was a member of the Marine Corps JROTC. Following his death, the school’s Marine Corps JROTC stated the following on their social media on Thursday:
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our own. Class of 2014, former cadet Ryan O’Hara was the Crew Chief on the Black Hawk involved in last nights crash in DC. Our deepest condolences go out to Gary O’Hara and his entire family.”
The statement further added:
Ryan is fondly remembered as a guy who would fix things around the ROTC gym as well as a vital member of the Rifle Team.”
