Kauli Vaast is a Tahitian native French professional surfer who was born on February 2, 2002, in Vairao, Tahiti, French Polynesia. He is currently 22 years old and resides in Teahupo’o, Tahiti, French Polynesia. The French surfer recently won a gold medal for France in men’s surfing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Kauli has two younger siblings, a sister and a brother, and his sister, Aelan, is also a professional surfer.
Kauli is of Polynesian ethnicity and was born to his parents, father Gaël Vaast and his mother, Natou Thupalua.
Height and weight
Kauli Vaast stands at a height of 176 cm (5 ft 9 in) and roughly weighs around 70 kg (154 lb).
Career and achievements
Kauli Vaast first rode on a surfboard when he was four years old with his father. Two years later, he began surfing on his own and by age eight, Vaast surfed Teahupo’o for the first time. He won a local surfing competition in the process, which motivated him further to train competitively as a surfer.
Notably, Vaast is a now three-time WSL European Junior Champion, after winning it in 2017, 2019, and 2020. Vaast came in second in the Outerknown Tahiti Pro 2022, and in 2023, he made his first WQS win in Morocco. Vaast then qualified for the 2024 Olympics after winning the 2023 ISA World Surfing Games to claim the European slot. Earlier this year, at the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games, Vaast won a bronze, behind Gabriel Medina and Ramzi Boukhiam. He is now the winner of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics men’s shortboard event.
