Tributes are pouring after NFL world lost an icon, a Hall of Gamer and legendary American football player. 

Jim Otto, a Hall of Fame centre and longtime Raider, passed away aged 86 on Sunday, the organisation confirmed.

He was believed to have undergone more than 50 operations, most because of football-related injuries including multiple joint replacements, arthritis, and debilitating back and neck problems. His right leg was amputated in 2007 and Otto also had prostate cancer and two major infections. The 86 year old’s cause of death isn’t known though.

James Edwin Otto was an American football player who played as a center for the Oakland Raiders. He was born on January 5, 1938.

Some of Jim Otto’s career highlights are AFL champion (1967), 9× First-team All-AFL (1960–1965, 1967–1969), First-team All-Pro (1970),  Second-team All-Pro (1972), Second-team All-AFL (1966), 9× AFL All-Star (1961–1969), 3× Pro Bowl (1970–1972), NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, AFL All-Time Team. 

When Otto was a football player at Wausau High School, Win Brockmeyer was his coach. While playing collegiate football at the University of Miami in South Florida, he became a member of the fraternity Phi Delta Theta. He was an offensive lineman and defensive linebacker for the University of Miami.

Otto spent fifteen years as the centre for the Raiders during the 1960s and 1970s. One of the last players in the league to don the No. 00 jersey was him. The Raiders, who had drafted him in the inaugural AFL Draft in 1960, were his team of choice for his whole career.  

Before the AFL was dissolved and merged with the NFL, he was one of just three players to have played in all 140 regular-season games. Before he retired following the 1974 season, he played in an amazing 210 consecutive games without missing a single one during his 15 seasons in the league. 

Otto played in six AFL or AFC title games when his team won the AFL championship in 1967. When he first became eligible, in 1980, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He worked in the Raiders front office for a spell after retiring.

Jim Otto is survived by Sally, his wife son Jim Jr. and daughter-in-law Leah. He also has 14 grandchildren named Alice, Sarah, Amy, Amanda, Josiah, Hannah, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Jennifer, Avery, Noah, Aiden, Roman and Ellie. 

His net worth isn’t known.
