S Hemachandran who was a 26-year-old man hailing from Puducherry passed away as a result of anesthesia-related complications following weight loss surgery at the BP Jain Hospital
150-kg S Hemachandran was admitted to a private hospital in the Chennai’s Pammal locality. Hemachandran was getting ready for bariatric and metabolic surgery. Unfortunately, the young man passed away shortly after the anaesthesia was administered.

Shortly after age 26 S Hemachandran who weighed 150 kg passed away, his 52-year-old father D Selvanathan filed a complaint at the Shankar Nagar police station after the terrible incident. The investigation has began in this medical negligence case. The doctor’s assistant, Dr. Perungo, and the BP Jain Hospital where Hemachandran was admitted were named in the complaint.
Selvanathan revealed that after witnessing Dr. Perungo’s weight loss surgery videos on YouTube, he and his son had first visited the doctor at Rela Hospital in April last year. He got diagnosed with diabetes and Dr. Perungo recommended a number of tests to be performed before undergoing the surgical procedure.
Selvanathan met Dr. Perungo in February and he discussed about his financial situation and his incapacity to pay for the procedure. The surgeon’s personal assistant then told him that the surgery will cost Rs 4 lakh at BP Jain Hospital and Rs 8 lakh at Rela Hospital.
Complications faced by S Hemachandran
S Hemachandran’s surgery was scheduled for April 3rd at Rela Hospital, however it had to be postponed because of his high blood sugar. His blood sugar levels returned to normal, and the medical staff decided to go ahead and do the surgery. Hemachandran was brought to BP Jain Hospital on April 21, 2024 and the surgery was scheduled for 22 April, 2024.
Hemachandran was taken to the surgery room at nine thirty in the morning on April 22. Problems started occurring after anaesthesia was given. Hemachandran’s father Selvanathan was notified by Dr. Perungo right away that his son had a serious illness and needed to be transferred to Rela Hospital in Chrompet. Hemachandran tragically died the next evening.
Selvanathan wants action from authorities against Dr. Perungo, his assistant, and BP Jain Hospital. Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the reason behind Hemachandran’s demise.
