Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand was surpassed by GM Arjun Erigaisi as the top-ranked Indian in the official FIDE rating list on Monday.

With a live rating of 2758.3, Arjun is now ranked seventh in the world. Erigaisi’s quick rise to the top of the world rankings at the age of 20 marks a turning point in his developing career. In a FIDE Rating list, he became the second Indian, after D Gukesh, to overtake Anand as the country’s top rank.

Erigaisi improved his rating by 8.3 Elo points from the Bundesliga West and the 5th Shengzhen Chess Masters, propelling him to the top spot in India. While the 20-year-old is making waves in Chess industry, let us have a look at who he is.
Who is Arjun Erigaisi?
Arjun Erigaisi is an Indian chess grandmaster who was born on September 3, 2003 in Warangal, Telangana, India and is now ranked first in India as of April 20, 24. The youngster who stands 5’3″ attended the BS Chess Academy in Hyderabad to study chess.
A look at Arjun Erigaisi’s career so far
Started just for fun, Arjun enjoed playing chess with his friends but later, he became passionate about the indoor mind game, grabbing his first victory in 2011 in the Under-nine selection tournament where he ended second. He later won gold in State Under-11 selections in 2012 and 2014 in the Ahmedabad National U-13 Championship.
The chess prodigy became the 32nd youngest grandmaster ever at the age of 14 years, 11 months, and 13 days. He is India’s fifty-fourth grandmaster. The Indian National Championship was won by him in 2022.
2015 saw Arjun win a silver medal in Korea during the Asian Youth Championship. He was the first grandmaster from Telangana state in 2018. Arjun Erigaisi had a great year in 2021, as he qualified for the Champions Chess Tour’s Goldmoney Asian Rapid as the first Indian ever. In 2022, he won Tata Steel Chess 2022 Challengers, MPL National Championship of India, Delhi Open and a silver medal in Chess Olympiad.
Arjun Erigaisi’s parents
Arjun was born to E. Jyoti, who is a homemaker and a neurosurgeon father Dr. Srinivas Rao. He also has a sister named Keerthana.
He signed a Rs.12.4 crore (US$1.5 million) long term sponsorship deal with Quantbox.
Arjun’s first coach was B. Sampath (BS Chess Academy), who taught him the basics. His trainer and mentor now is Srinath Narayanan and coach is Rustam Kasimzdhanov.
